Amateurs put centre stage at the RSC - posted 02.9.2010 Amateurs put centre stage at the RSC

An article in The Stage reports that the reopening programme for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s transformed £112.8 million Stratford-upon-Avon home, will focus heavily on amateur theatre.

Artistic Director Michael Boyd said that he wanted to use its opening to put amateur theatre “centre stage” and help overcome the “crucifix and garlic” attitude between professional and amateur sectors.

“As part of a programme of work between now and 2012 with the World Shakespeare Festival, we are very interested in trying to renegotiate the relationship between amateur theatre and professional theatre in this country. We’re sticking the amateurs centre stage with our opening - with an open house night of local amateur performers, with another night where there’s amateur choirs from across the UK, as well as a major thing from school kids.”

Nominate your group for an epic award – deadline extended - posted 26.8.2010 Nominate your group for an epic award – deadline extended

area: England
deadline: 10 October 2010

The epic awards, from Voluntary Arts England are here to shine a spotlight on the excellent work taking place within the voluntary and amateur arts, which we know is happening all over the country.

From brass bands to batik, line dancing to lace making, wood turning to writing and everything in between we want to show you just how epic you are. We are not necessarily looking for all singing, all dancing projects that have set the world alight, but a project that has something to say, moved practice forward and approached ways of working differently.

Your group or organisation can nominate yourselves in the four categories which make up the epic awards:
• Engagement
• Partnerships
• Innovation
• Creativity
Winners will receive a package of prizes, recognition and an invitation to a winners’ reception at the House of Lords.

Due to popular demand we have extended the deadline for nominations to 10 October 2010. If your art or craft group is doing some excellent work then nominate them for an epic award by visiting www.epicawards.co.uk.
